Okay. I’m not pleased with the server that we’re on right now. I ordered a replacement this week, and have it mostly configured already (since I kept track of configuring the previous one). I just need to copy the data (pages, pictures, databases) and config files for apache and MySQL over.
The old server, which I used until January was a Blue & White G3 with 1GB of RAM and a 500MHz G4 upgrade card in it. This server is a 2GHz Celeron (ick) with 1GB of RAM. The 500MHz G4 processor on Mac OS X 10.0 pretty much matched the performance of the 2GHz Celeron on Fedora Core 2. The next server is a 3GHz P4 (ick) with 2GB of RAM. I’m hoping that the faster processor and increased RAM will alleviate the performance issues. Though the database locking issues do have me a little concerned that they might not be due to resource constraints. We’ll see.
The very next day after I ordered the new server and prepaid for a year, I received a very interesting proposal from Allume, makers of StuffIt products. The very nature of the proposal warrants this free plug for them.
I’m not sure whether or not it will work out, but I’m going to investigate further. We’ll see where it goes.
